Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing is the process of earning money (commissions) every time you promote a company’s products or services and make a sale. As you only get paid every time you drive a sale, just like a commission-only salesperson.

Affiliate marketing promotes other people’s products for a small commission per sale. You may have seen titles marked as “affiliate link” or “sponsored post” on many of the websites you visit.

Yes, the result is usually a sale, but some programs can reward you for leads, users of a free trial of a program, click on a website, or downloads of an app.

Types of Affiliate Marketing

There are three main types of affiliate marketing: unattached affiliate marketing, related affiliate marketing, and involved affiliate marketing.

1) Unattached Affiliate Marketing

In the unrelated business model, the affiliate marketer has no connection with the product or service they are promoting. It cannot make claims about its use.

Usually, an unrelated affiliate partner runs pay-per-click (PPC) marketing campaigns. Using an affiliate link in the hope that shoppers will click on it and make a purchase themselves.

While unrelated affiliate marketing may be attractive to some due to its lack of commitment, it is generally for those who simply want to generate income without investing in the product or customer relationship.

2) Related Affiliate Marketing

It is for those who do not necessarily use the product or service. But they are somehow connected to the niche audience. These affiliates often have some sort of prestige sway, and therefore can offer some power.

For example, you might be promoting a clothing brand that you haven’t used before, but have an audience through a fashion blog or YouTube channel. In this case, you will be considered a relevant affiliate marketer.

The advantage of this type of affiliate marketing is that the affiliate has the expertise to generate product traffic, however, they may risk recommending a bad product or service if they have not used it before, which could cost them the trust of their audience.

3) Involved Affiliate Marketing

As the name implies, affiliate marketing describes those who are closely related to the product or service they are promoting. The affiliate company has tried the product themselves and is confident that they will provide a good experience using it.

Instead of relying on pay-per-click, affiliate marketers use their personal experiences with the product in their marketing efforts, and customers can trust them as reliable sources of information.

Of course, this type of affiliate marketing requires more work and time to build credibility, but it is more likely to lead to greater profits in the future.
